Larks

Two species breed in the UK the Skylark and the Woodlark, one is a regular visitor in winter and some others are rare vagrants from Europe, where several other species are common. There are many more species worldwide. Most are pale brown with dark streaks in subtly different patterns. They have rounded wings and rather short tails, stout legs with a long, arched hind claw and strong, triangular, pointed bills. Most species sing while in flight in open areas with few high perches. They nest on the ground and avoid wooded or bushy areas.
